On June 28th, the world of history education lost one of its most powerful and effective voices. Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia died after a lengthy illness at a suburban Washington, D.C. hospital.

During a career that spanned more than fifty years in public service, Byrd was a leading figure in advocating for the effective and comprehensive teaching of history in schools. His efforts culminated in the 2000 enabling legislation that established the Teaching American History Grant program.

In recognition of his service to the teaching and learning of history, the National Council for History Education created the Robert Byrd Award in the spring of 2008. It recognizes distinguished leadership in advancing the study of history in our nations schools. The first recipient of this award was Senator Byrd who received it from author and historian David McCullough in a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol on September 28, 2008.
